PAGANS
WELCOME REPEAL OF ANTI-WITCHCRAFT LAWS
Pagans across
Victoria are
celebrating the Bracks
Government’s decision to repeal Section 13 of the
Vagrancy Act, which prohibits the practice of witchcraft
and fortune-telling.
Gavin Andrew, Victorian
Coordinator for the Pagan Awareness Network Inc (PAN
Inc) said today: ‘We’ve been hoping for this since 2003,
when the Attorney-General first flagged his intentions.
We’ve long argued the current law is outdated and
discriminates on the basis of religion, and we welcome
its repeal.’
Mr Andrew added: ‘There’ll
be several thousand Pagans in
Melbourne celebrating this
news under the full moon tonight.’
According to the
Australian Bureau of Statistics, Pagan and other
nature-based religions are the fastest growing religious
denomination in
Australia.
The repeal of Section 13
also has implications for
Victoria’s religious
vilification laws. Mr
Andrew said: ‘With the repeal of Section 13, nobody will
be able to vilify Witches and Pagans, and then try to
claim the Racial and Religious Tolerance Act doesn’t
apply to them.’
The Racial and Religious
Tolerance Act 2001 only protects ‘lawful’ religious
activities.

The
Pagan Awareness Network Inc is now the new
owner of Magick Happens. November 2002.
|
I have to start by thanking Rowan for all the
work she has done in the past to get an event like
this off the ground and up and running.
Unfortunately Rowan has had to give running Magick
Happens away due to personal reasons,
but rather than let the business name Magick Happens
and the event disappear, she signed it over to the
Pagan Awareness Network Inc. So while I am sad that
Rowan has had to endure what she has and give away
her "baby", I am very happy that we now
have the opportunity to continue the good work that
she started.
With the finalisation of the transfer of business
name to the Pagan Awareness Network Inc, this will
be the first call for a sub-committee. The
sub-committee will be responsible for organising and
running the event once a year, as a non-profit
event. To be on the committee you must be a member
of the association. (to
join go here ) If you are interested in
being on the Magick Happens Committee please contact
me directly. I will set a date for the first meeting
where we will formalise the application to form a
sub-committee under the rules of the association.
The Web site is up and running again www.magickhappens.com.au. We will place constant updates on the site to
keep you all informed of what is happening and the
planed dates for the next event.

Australian
Census creates interest in Paganism/ Witchcraft July
2002
|
|
The
media has been full of articles about Witchcraft and
Paganism in the last few weeks with the release of the
census in Australia. It has show there has been a 400%
increase in our numbers. Below you will find links to
some of the media that we have been involved with
because of this.
We
are not always happy with the way that the article is
portrayed, but as long as there is some positive
information and it is not defamatory we are happy for
the opportunity to answer some of the questions about
our religious practice.

| PAN Inc sponsors Pagan Pride Float at
2002 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. See Photo Gallery
:) |
|
Pagan pride is a group of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and
Heterosexual Pagans who are participating in the 2002
Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. The theme of
the float is "Celebration of Sacred Sexuality".
By participating in the Parade we are sending a message
of support to the GLBT community as well as showing
that we are also a part of it and that we find all forms
of sexuality to be held sacred, both by ourselves and
our
Gods and Goddesses.
Participants are dressed as a God or Goddess representing
the fact that we are one with them, and that we do not
see ourselves as separate from them and that their divine
gift of sacred sexuality is naturally a part of us.
