What is Samhain?
Samhain (pronounced: sow-en) is a pagan holiday that
is known best to be celebrated on October 31. It marks
the end of Summer and the beginning of Winter. In
modern times, this celebration has become known as
Halloween.
In Australia, where Summer occurs through the
Nov-March months, and Winter is May-September Samhain
is commonly celebrated on, or close to, April 30th.
In the past, Samhain was a festival for the time
between the old year and the new year. It was a time
for having bonfires and playing tricks. It was also
thought a time when people could make contact with
departed loved ones and foretell the future.
It is a time to remember what has past, and celebrate
all we have gained. We remember our ancestors and
beloved dead.
Today Neo-Pagan people still have special ceremonies
on this day. Some people have parties and other people
have special dinners.
In Canberra PAN nc have been celebrating Samhain
publically since 2004. Join us in 2007 for a fun
evening of finger foods, entertainment, dancing and
competitions and prizes.
Do I have to be 'pagan' to come to Samhain?
Absolutely not! Everyone will love this event - you
get good food, alcohol (and soft drinks), awesome
entertainment - and you get to dress up!
Do I have to wear a costume?
No, of course not. But it makes it more fun! Get in
the spirit of Samhain by dressing up, all magical and
mysterious like. You won’t be able to enter the
costume and mask contests and win awesome prizes if
you don’t dress up…
Costume competition categories this year include:
Most ‘Watery’ costume
Best Couple
Best Mask
Scariest ‘Watery’ costume.
And more…
