In honour of Dionysos, the Rural Dionysia which is held in the Winter months June-July (southern Hemisphere) it involved revelries focussing on fertility. including phallic chant, sacrifice. drinking of wine. singing of songs to the god of fertility. Eventually tragic and comic plays were performed perhaps evolving from the practice of drunken. masked paraders, carrying the phallus and singing songs honoring the god of fertility and insulting citizens. By the time plays were performed, Dionysos was identified as the god of fertility. It attracted Euripides, Socrates and other men of importance. Some claim Comedy evolved from the Rural Dionysia. Ostarian Grove (OG) formed in September 2006 after two covens formed a friendship at the Australian Wiccan Conference. Upon being welcomed into the pagan community, OG’s members soon felt a passionate need to give something back to the community they loved. They began running open circles in 2007, gaining momentum with the successful launch of the Pagan Community Weekend (PCW) in Feb 2008. OG soon settled into running regular events, workshops, open circles, hosting Northern Sydney's 'Pagans in the Pub', and moderating one of Australia's largest and most active pagan groups on Facebook. In January 2008 OG agreed to become a Pagan Awareness Network Inc. subcommittee, attaining legal backing for all of their events. |
